How to Dress a Newborn in Winter in Pakistan

Pakistan's winters vary a lot: Karachi stays mild, while Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and the north get properly cold, often with little indoor heating. Newborns can't control their body temperature as well as adults, so how you layer matters more than how thick a single outfit is. This guide covers what to put your baby in by day and by night, and how to tell whether they are too warm or too cold.

How should I dress my newborn in winter?

Dress your baby in thin layers you can add or remove. A simple rule many parents use is one more layer than you are wearing yourself. A practical layering system looks like this:

  1. Base layer: a cotton bodysuit or high-neck shirt against the skin.
  2. Middle layer: a full-sleeve romper or a fleece set, such as the Winter Bear fleece romper or the Teddy Bear fleece hoodie set.
  3. Outer layer (outdoors only): a jacket, shawl or blanket over the top, plus a cap and socks.

Take the outer layer and cap off once you are back indoors or in a warm car, so your baby doesn't overheat.

How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?

Hands and feet often feel cool even when a baby is warm enough, so they are not a reliable guide. Instead, feel the back of the neck or the tummy:

  • Warm and dry: about right.
  • Sweaty, red or clammy: too warm. Remove a layer.
  • Cool to the touch: add a layer.

Overheating is a bigger risk for young babies than being slightly cool, so when in doubt, use fewer, lighter layers and check again.

What should a baby wear to sleep in winter?

At night, a bodysuit under a full-sleeve or footed romper is enough for most homes. Footed rompers keep feet warm without socks that slip off. Health services such as the NHS advise putting babies to sleep on their back, keeping their head uncovered indoors, and avoiding thick duvets, pillows and loose blankets in the cot. If you use a blanket, tuck it in firmly no higher than the shoulders. Keep the room comfortably cool rather than hot, and don't put a heater close to the cot.

Winter clothes checklist for a newborn

  • 6–8 bodysuits or high-neck shirts (base layers)
  • 4–6 full-sleeve or footed rompers
  • 2–3 fleece rompers or hoodie sets for outings
  • 2–3 caps and several pairs of socks
  • A warm outer layer or blanket for going out

Car seats and winter coats

Thick, puffy coats can compress in a crash and leave car seat straps too loose. Dress your baby in thinner layers, buckle the straps snugly, and put a blanket over the top of the harness instead.

Quick answers

What fabric is best for babies in winter? Soft cotton against the skin, with a cotton-fleece layer on top for warmth. Fleece is warm and light, and cotton next to the skin is comfortable for sensitive skin.

Should my baby wear a cap indoors? Not usually once you are inside a warm room, and not while sleeping. Caps are most useful outdoors and on cold journeys.

What size winter clothes should I buy? Buy the size that fits now plus a few pieces one size up, because babies grow quickly through the winter months. Check the size chart on each product page, or read our FAQ.
